What is Rest Home Care?
Rest Home Care is designed for people who need help with everyday living but don’t require the higher level of clinical care provided in a hospital setting.
Residents may need support with:
- Showering, dressing and personal care.
- Taking medications.
- Mobility and moving around safely.
- Meals and nutrition.
- Housekeeping and laundry.
- Ongoing health monitoring.
Rest Home Care allows residents to maintain as much independence as possible while receiving the support they need in a safe and welcoming environment.
What is Hospital Level Care?
Hospital Level Care is for people with more complex health needs who require a higher level of clinical care and nursing support.
This may include residents who:
- Require regular clinical monitoring.
- Have complex medical conditions.
- Need assistance with most daily activities.
- Require specialised equipment or nursing care.
- Have increased mobility or health-related needs.
Hospital Level Care provides 24-hour nursing support and personalised care tailored to each resident’s health requirements.
How is the appropriate level of care determined?
The level of care isn’t chosen by the resident or their family.
Instead, it’s determined through a Needs Assessment, which is completed by a qualified health professional.
The assessment considers:
- Your health and medical needs.
- Mobility.
- Personal care requirements.
- Cognitive function.
- Overall ability to manage everyday life.
The goal is to ensure you receive the level of care that’s right for your individual needs.
What happens if my care needs increase?
This is one of the questions we’re asked most often.
As people’s health changes over time, their care needs can also change.
If this happens, your care team will work with Health New Zealand to arrange a reassessment of your needs. If a higher level of care is recommended, your care plan will be updated to ensure you’re receiving the appropriate support.
For many families, knowing that care can adapt over time provides valuable peace of mind.
Please note: Not every Alden Care Home provides both Rest Home and Hospital Level Care. Our team can explain the care services available at your preferred location and what options may be available if your needs change in the future.
Will I need to move rooms if my care needs change?
Not always.
If your Alden Care Home provides both Rest Home and Hospital Level Care and your current room is suitable for your new level of care, you may be able to remain in the same room.
In some cases, a move to a different room or another Alden Care Home may be necessary to ensure you receive the right environment and level of support.
Our team will always discuss the options with you and your family and help make any transition as smooth as possible.
Will my fees change?
Your fees may change if your assessed level of care changes or if different funding arrangements apply.
If this happens, we’ll explain any changes clearly before they take effect, so you understand what to expect.

Can someone move from Rest Home Care to Hospital Level Care?
Yes. If your needs change over time, you can be reassessed to determine whether Hospital Level Care is now appropriate.
Is Hospital Level Care the same as being in a public hospital?
No. Hospital Level Care is provided in a residential aged care setting. It offers 24-hour nursing care and clinical support in a home-like environment, rather than the acute treatment provided in a public hospital.
