What is respite care?
Respite care provides short-term residential care for people who need additional support for a limited period of time. It gives family members and carers the opportunity to take a break, recover from illness, travel, or simply recharge knowing their loved one is receiving professional care.
Respite care can also be helpful after a hospital stay or while longer-term care arrangements are being considered.
At Alden, respite residents receive the same high standard of care, meals, activities and support as our permanent residents, helping them feel welcome and comfortable from the moment they arrive.
Who is respite care suitable for?
Respite care may be appropriate if:
- A family carer needs a planned or unexpected break.
- Someone is recovering after a hospital stay.
- Extra support is needed following illness or injury.
- Families would like to experience residential care before making a longer-term decision.
Every person’s needs are different, and the most appropriate level of respite care is determined through a Needs Assessment where required.
How long can someone stay?
The length of a respite stay depends on individual circumstances, funding arrangements and room availability.
Some people stay for just a few days, while others may stay for several weeks.
Our team can discuss what’s available and help you understand the options.
Can respite care become permanent care?
Yes.
Many residents first experience Alden through respite care before deciding that permanent residential care is the right choice.
If your needs change during your stay, we’ll work with you, your family and Health New Zealand to discuss the next steps and, where appropriate, transition into permanent care.
